Individually Configurable Planes from Veritas (Custom Bench Planes)
With the completely new concept of configurable planes, Veritas allows you to customize the plane to perfectly suit your work and the way you do it. You can individually select the angle of the frog, the material of the blade, and the size and shape of the handle and knob. This allows you to customize the plane in a way that was previously only possible with custom-made planes.
Every part of the plane is manufactured by Veritas with the utmost precision. This guarantees that the plane functions as a whole, no matter which parts you combine. We also offer each plane completely preconfigured in a configuration that is well suited to the work typically performed with this type of plane. This allows you to start planing immediately. You can also customize the planes to your individual needs with various parts and additional accessories.
The selectable blades are finished with a 30° bevel angle.
Maple is used for the handles and knobs of the Veritas configurable planes, which is torrefied (colloquially: roasted, baked, dried) in a kiln. The high heat in the kiln almost completely removes the moisture in the wood, and the natural sugar content of the maple is caramelized. Wood treated in this way hardly changes its volume even with changes in humidity, making it dimensionally stable and ideal for wooden handles.
1. Plane body and blade selection
- O1 steel blades are oil-hardened and double-tempered. They have a hardness of 58-60 HRC. O1 steel is easier to sharpen than PM-V11, but also dulls more quickly.
- PM-V11 steel has a fine and even grain structure and a hardness of 61-63 HRC. This makes it considerably more resistant to wear and damage than O1 steel. Nevertheless, the cutting edge can be easily sharpened with waterstones or other common methods.

2. Selecting the Frog
- A bed angle of 40° reduces resistance when planing and is well suited for cleanly working end grain.
- 45° is the most common cutting angle for planes with the bevel facing down. It is suitable for most jobs.
- A cutting angle of 55° is particularly suitable for working with difficult woods and workpieces with uneven grain, as it helps prevent fiber tearing. However, it also requires more force when planing.

Choosing the Handle
- You can choose between two different handle shapes and three sizes each. To find the right size, measure the width of your hand along the knuckles.
- If your hand is up to 75 mm wide, use the small handles.
- If your hand is between 75 mm and 98 mm wide, use the medium handles.
- If your hand is wider than 98 mm, use the large handles.
- The Veritasform handle (standard on Veritas planes with the bevel facing upwards) is almost vertical and fits comfortably in the hand. This handle arrangement allows you to keep your forearm almost parallel to the sole of the plane while planing, allowing you to push the plane forward with more force.
- The traditional handle is more forward-angled and more curved than the Vertiasform handle. It resembles the historical models and allows the plane to be pressed more firmly against the workpiece. It is also more comfortable to use if your workbench is rather low.

Knob Selection
- The standard knob is the one used on most other Veritas planes. It is a good choice if you frequently change your grip position, depending on what you are doing with the plane. It is largely spherical, 60 mm (2-3/8 inches) high, and has a maximum diameter of 44 mm (1-3/8 inches).
- The wide knob has a rather flat profile. The large surface provides a comfortable resting surface for the heel of your hand when you press the front of the plane onto the workpiece. At the same time, it offers your fingers more grip when you lift the plane from the workpiece at the end of the pass. The wide knob is particularly suitable for long or heavy planes. It is 51 mm (2 inches) high and has a diameter of 51 mm (2 inches).
- The tall knob is a good choice if you want to grip the knob with your whole hand—especially if you have smaller hands. It also offers more space if you push the plane with just the crook of your thumb. It is 67 mm (2-5/8 inches) high and has a diameter of 41 mm (1-5/8 inches).
