GOKUI Super Deluxe Ryoba nera
This beautiful Ryoba saw is the product of a collaboration between two well-known saw smiths, Yoskiwaka and Ikeda, who work in Miki, Japan. It is marketed under the flowery and self-conscious brand name "Gokui", which means something like "The highest level of the art has been reached!" The smiths have developed a saw that on the ripcut side, includes "raker" teeth. Rip cut saws in principle have relatively coarse teeth. These raker teeth ("Ikeda-Me"), for which Ikeda has a patent, make for a finer rip cut.
This saw is hand-forged, and uniformly hardened. The saw blade, as one often finds with high-quality traditional ryoba saws, is forged so that the middle of the blade is thinner than the edges in order to reduce friction with the wood. This feature is achieved with scrapers, removing very fine shavings from the middle of the blade. So the saw is about 0.5 mm thick at the teeth, but about 0.35 mm in the center of the blade. The shaft is forged to about 1 mm thick, to give the blade more strength and stiffness where it enters the hand grip. This makes for a very durable tool!
On the rip cut edge, every 5th and 6th tooth is a raker tooth, for faster and cleaner sawing.
Although Japanese cross-cut saws already are made with these raker teeth, on this saw the tooth geometry has been adjusted for a much more effective cut. The cross-cut side of this saw allows not only fast and clean cross cuts, but also performs very well when cutting on the diagonal. Even very fine rip cuts are possible!
